Surfactant flushing is an efficient stand-alone remediation treatment or can be used as a cost-effective enhancement of existing treatment systems. Using surfactants in remediation increases the solubility of organic contaminants, providing a number of benefits:
Increase free-product recovery
Enhance mobility of contaminants
Improve contaminant bioavailability for aerobic or anaerobic bioremediation
PetroSolv™ is a non-ionic biosurfactant special formulated to be used in remediation treatments. Application using PetroSolv™ can be used to remediate a wide range of contaminants, including diesel, heating oil, and chlorinated solvents.
Application methods include:
ETEC can help design a surfactant flushing application that best fits your sites unique characteristics. Some applications can utilize existing site infrastructure, leading to a cost-effective treatment.
PetroSolv™ is a low cost, biodegradable, non-ionic surfactant specially-formulated for soil flushing and enhanced free product recovery. PetroSolv™ is also applicable at dilute concentrations for vapor suppression of volatile organic constituents.
PROPERTIES AND CHARACTERISTICS
PetroSolv™ represents a major advancement in natural, biodegradable surfactant products – extremely effective yet environmentally responsible. PetroSolv™ is formulated for cost effective, simple specification and application.
Additional product information includes:
ETEC manufactures, distributes and provides technical support
Non-ionic surfactant designed for free-product recovery of petroleum or solvents
Emulsifies and solubilizes free-product and soil bound contaminants
Quantity estimates are based on impacted soil volume and extractable groundwater volume
Use in conjunction with groundwater extraction or recirculation.
A dilute solution (typically 1-10%) is injected into the impacted zone to solubilized and mobilize NAPL that is trapped in the soil.
When surfactants are introduced into a water/fuel system, they have two major results:
Temporary mobilization/emulsification of free and sorbed NAPL; and
Solubilization of residual NAPL (making it more bioavailable).
In order to stimulate biodegradation of residual solubilized NAPL that is dissolved in groundwater as a result of the surfactant injections, ETEC typically recommends application of our PetroBac™ and CBN™ (nutrients and secondary electron acceptors) for aerobic degradation and CarBstrate™ for reductive remediation. The application of bioremediation products supports the degradation of mobilized contaminants that may be left behind following the surfactant-flushing event and provides treatment for many months following treatment.
Application of PetroSolv™ makes for quick clean up of roadway surfaces and eliminates hazardous oil sheen. When PetroSolv™ is applied directly to a fuel spill it rapidly reduces the fire and explosion risk (i.e. lowers the LEL readings) to make the area safe to continue cleanup activities.
Equipment Decon and Tank Cleaning
Applied using a pressure washer or steam/hot water cleaning system, PetroSolv™ can take care of all your tough to clean equipment and tools. Used on tank cleaning, remediation and drilling sites for decontamination and in refineries and industrial maintenance operations to improve operation. PetroSolv™ is a low cost solution to addressing your oily mess.
Excavation Odor/Vapor Suppression
Applied in a dilute solution, PetroSolv™ can be sprayed on stockpiles or exposed excavation surfaces to reduce volatilization of hazardous VOCs and eliminate odors. PetroSolv™ is a biodegradable, low cost alternative to foam sprays. ETEC recommends applying our PetroBac™ and CBN™ along with our PetroSolv, to promote long term biological degradation of residual impacts left behind.
